DIY Crop Top and Culottes + Pattern Review

20150616_153325

Hello all! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Today I want to share this very cute outfit with you all. The crop top is Simplicity 1283 and the culottes are McCall’s 7131. I love earth tones, so when I saw this fabric and Fine Fabrics, I knew exactly what I was going to make out of it. For  the crop top I cut a 12 and added 2 inches to the bottom because I didn’t want to show too much of my tummy.  The pattern says cut 2 pieces for the front and 2 pieces for the back but I cut both front and back pieces on the fold. Check out the pattern review below on the culottes (McCall’s 7131). Sorry for lighting in some of the pictures, still working out the glitches! See you later!

Pattern Description:  M7131 Misses’ Shorts and Pants

Fabric used: Polyester Blend

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done? Yes

What size did you cut? 12

Level of difficulty: The envelop says easy but I had a difficult time understanding the instructions but the light bulb came on at the end when attaching the  waistband to the pants. So I will say it is easy, minus MY human error! LOL!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I didn’t like adding the 4 pieces of elastic to the back waistband but it is well worth it in the end because the fit is great!

Pattern alterations or design changes: I am only 5’2” so the pants were extremely long; I had to cut over 6 inches off the bottom to make them have the look of culottes

Would you sew it again? Yes, now that I know where I went wrong!

Would you recommend it for others? Yes

  3. Cute Lee! I think the culottes are a cute throwback with a m odern twist. I would love to see them in a bright pattern!

  4. I have the culottes pattern. Plan to make and I’m a newbie too, so what did you struggle with on the waistband?

    • Its kinda hard to explain. Let’s just say I didn’t follow the directions that came with the pattern. I sewed the pants like I would any normal pair of pants but the waistband should have already been attached before I completely sewed the pants together.
